Introduction
Starting an online business after 50 can be an exciting venture, offering new opportunities and the chance to pursue long-held dreams. However, there are key challenges starting an online business after 50. In this Article I will look to cover the main worries, concerns and Challenges I faced and hopefully provide insights on how to overcome them if you are in the same boat.
After a Life change owing to my employment ending I had to decide what to do, and quickly. I was in my late 50’s and realised that I would not get a similar position, at a similar salary, that my previous employment offered.
I turned to opportunities that appeared online, and a long story short (you can read more about me in my bio profile here) I quickly found, at a cost of time and money, what does work, what doesnt work and what to avoid when starting a business online in your 50’s.
Currently I have built and run an Online E-Commerce Store as well as run various bloggs and articles that make commissions online. My experience, starting from scratch hopefully can help you too.
So, starting with the first challenge…
Technological Proficiency
One of the primary hurdles for many entrepreneurs over 50 is keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. The digital landscape can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not accustomed to using various online tools and platforms. I was (and still am) finding my way around the methods and ways in which to create an online business. However, rest assured, that from someone who asks his grandchildren to operate the tv remote, that If I can do it, so can you.
Whilst I definately didn’t use all the below, I did fall back on a lot of self help guides you can find online. Also, I found that when I decided to work with certain opportunities, the help, tutorials, and support given was superb.
Tips for Improving Technological Proficiency:
- Take online courses or attend workshops focused on digital skills
- Seek guidance from younger family members or tech-savvy friends
- Start with user-friendly platforms and gradually expand your knowledge
- Consider hiring a tech-savvy assistant or consultant for complex tasks
Physical and Mental Health
Starting a business at any age can be stressful, but it’s especially important to consider your physical and mental health when embarking on this journey after 50. Let’s face it we are not as young as we used to be and I also found that I spend long hours sitting at my desk at home, and yes it is a struggle to force myself ‘up and out’ for a walk
Strategies for Maintaining Health:
- Schedule regular health check-ups
- Incorporate exercise and time to think into your daily routine; I pretend that I have to take a lunch hour and go for a walk
- Set realistic work hours to avoid burnout – this is key, set your work time and stick to it.
- Prioritize sleep and proper nutrition – no raiding the fridge for that piece of cheese, or scoffing the contents of the biscuit barrel.
Financial Concerns
Financial stability is often a significant concern for those starting a business later in life. You may have retirement savings to consider or other financial obligations that complicate your entrepreneurial journey.
Financial Planning Tips:
- Consult with a financial advisor to create a solid business plan
- Consider starting your business as a side venture before fully committing. In other words, dont quit the day job just yet.
- Explore funding options such as small business loans or enterprise loans that your local business hubs may provide
- Be mindful of your personal finances and set clear boundaries between business and personal expenses
Market Perceptions
Ageism can be a real challenge in the business world. Sadly I felt that, when my employment ended. However, I found that working an online business is down to 2 key factors. Forget age, it’s a) Your Willingness to Learn new things and b) putting your time and enthusiasm into your new venture.
Overcoming Market Perceptions:
- Highlight your years of experience and expertise as a strength. Everything you have learned in your work life will help you. There is no substitute for experience.
- Stay current with industry trends and technologies in your business and market choice.
- Build a strong online presence that showcases your skills and knowledge in your field and chosen market.
- Network with diverse age groups to broaden your perspective and connections. You will be suprised at what you can offer to a group, and by return what you will pick up in solutions, tips and ideas
Balancing Responsibilities
Many entrepreneurs over 50 are juggling multiple responsibilities, such as caring for aging parents or supporting adult children. Finding the right balance can be challenging and that is why I say you need a work plan, and be disciplined about it.
It is very easy to do something you enjoy, rather than the business task you need to accomplish. Especially in the early days. Just stick with it and it gets easier. Work discipline is like training muscles in a gym.
Tips for Balancing Responsibilities:
- Set clear boundaries between work and personal life
- Delegate tasks when possible, both in your business and personal life – ie can your partner take the car for a routine garage service rather than you.
- Use time management tools to stay organized – Calender Lists and deadline dates are good for keeping you on track
- Communicate openly with family members about your business goals and needs so they understand when you say you can not do something as you are ‘working’
I use the phrase ‘ Would You…Employ YOU!’
Skills Gap
The skills required for running an online business may be different from those you’ve developed throughout your career. My background meant that I had no idea on websites, their development etc. But I have learned that Identifying and addressing these gaps is crucial for success. And there is help out there.
Addressing the Skills Gap:
- Conduct a personal skills assessment to identify areas for improvement
- Take online courses or attend workshops to develop new skills. Even Youtube videos can be a great source of ‘How to Do…’ something
- Consider partnering with someone who complements your skill set
- Join professional organizations related to your industry for ongoing learning opportunities
In reality, I would say the best teacher is yourself by just having a go and trying. You will soon find what works, what doesn’t, What went wrong and importantly how to fix and undo what you did.
Networking
Building a strong network is essential for any business, but it can be challenging if you’re entering a new industry or transitioning to the online world. What I find also important is to create a sense of social interaction.
It can be lonely working solo so counter this by putting yourself out there.
Networking Strategies:
- Attend industry events and conferences, both online and in-person
- Join online communities and forums related to your business niche
- Leverage social media platforms to connect with peers and potential customers
- Offer your expertise through guest blogging or speaking engagements
Adaptability and Innovation
The online business landscape is constantly evolving, and as such this will require you to be adaptable and innovative. This can be particularly challenging for those who are used to more traditional business models. The Internet and online business is fast moving.
Fostering Adaptability and Innovation:
- Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies
- Be open to feedback and willing to pivot your business strategy when necessary – that is dont stagnate. What works today may not next year. be ready and adapt
- Be creativite and develop out-of-the-box thinking – particularly where solutions to a problem are needed. Your previous work experience will be something you can call on here.
- Regularly reassess your business goals and adjust your approach accordingly
Support Systems
Having a strong support system is crucial when starting a business, especially later in life. This includes both emotional support and practical assistance. Dont try to go it alone.
Building Support Systems:
- Join entrepreneur groups or mentorship programs specifically for older business owners
- Seek out a business coach or mentor who understands the unique challenges of starting a business after 50
- Foster relationships with fellow entrepreneurs for mutual support and advice
- Communicate openly with family and friends about your business goals and needs
Overcoming These Challenges
While the challenges of starting an online business after 50 are real, they are not insurmountable. Many entrepreneurs have successfully launched and grown online businesses later in life, leveraging their experience, wisdom, and unique perspectives.
Key Strategies for Success:
- Embrace lifelong learning and stay curious about new technologies and trends
- Leverage your years of experience and industry knowledge
- Focus on your strengths and outsource or delegate areas where you’re less confident
- Build a diverse network that includes both peers and younger entrepreneurs
- Take care of your physical and mental health throughout the entrepreneurial journey
- Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way
Conclusion
Starting an online business after 50 comes with its unique set of challenges, from technological hurdles to market perceptions. However, with the right mindset, support, and strategies, these challenges can be overcome. Your years of experience, combined with a willingness to learn and adapt, can be a powerful asset in starting an online business.
Remember, it’s never too late to pursue your entrepreneurial dreams and make a significant impact in the digital marketplace.
