How To Clean Leather Bags

Follow these expert tips for leather handbag care and maintenance in keeping your Italian leather bags, backpacks, and briefcases in pristine condition.

When you invest in an Italian leather bag, you’re not just acquiring an accessory; you’re embracing a legacy of craftsmanship and style. As your bag ages gracefully and exudes elegance and patina it will become a go-to choice for your carry needs, be it Daily use, a Weekend away or that Adventure in faraway lands.

Based on my travels and choosing to take my favourite Leather Bag with me (see my article on The benefits of carry on luggage, section 6, Business or Pleasure,) I found that to keep my bag in top condition (and make it last) I needed to look after it.

If you too have invested money in a quality leather bag (or product) you will want to look after it and after purchase, ask yourself the question as I did “How to clean my Leather Bag” I found you don’t need to go to expensive cleaners or repair outlets unless you really have damaged your bag and it needs professional care or renovation.

So, how to clean leather handbags at home, as you will see, with my top DIY leather handbag cleaning tips, below you should be able to protect, maintain and clean your bag.

1. Probably the most important point. When you are not using your bag use a dust cover to protect the leather against scratches while storing store it.

2. Do not stuff or overfill your bag. Leather bags can lose their shape if filled with too many objects. Ask the question… ‘Do I really need this…?’ your bag will thank you in the long run.

3.   Avoid spraying cologne, perfume, or aftershave near leather as it can patch affect the colour.

4. Not a lot of people are aware but if you store light-coloured leather next to a dark coloured leather, the darker leather shade could ‘migrate’ or rub off on to the lighter coloured item and cause irreversible damage.

5. Store all leather goods away from direct sunlight to prevent the colour from fading and Keep leather bags away from extreme heat as it can dry out the natural oils in your item.

It is important to remember that Leather, by its very nature and being a natural material will exhibit variations in colour. It is to be expected. Also, your Bag may have small minor imperfections that may be visible on the surface. This is normal so learn to love any ‘defining’ marks. These are what distinguishes your bag from someone else’s.

Now, the Cleaning Bit:

1. Embrace the Routine:

Regular maintenance is the cornerstone of leather care. Make it a habit to gently wipe your bag with a soft, damp cloth at the end of each day to remove dust and surface dirt. This simple ritual will prevent grime from settling into the pores of the leather.

2. Choose Quality Conditioning Products:

Invest in premium leather conditioning products specifically
formulated for Italian leather. Use a neutral cream. These products nourish the
leather, keeping it supple and preventing it from drying out or cracking over
time. Some of the best products can be found here, and personally I am a big
fan of Renapur. I use it on Bags, a WW2 Flying Jacket, Leather Motorbike
Gear, Boots etc.

3. Test Before You Treat:

Before applying any conditioning product to your Italian leather bag, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and prevent any potential discoloration or damage.

4. Guard Against Moisture:

Italian leather is naturally porous and susceptible to water damage. Protect your bag from unexpected showers and spills by applying a water repellent spray designed for leather. Be sure to reapply periodically, especially if you live in a rainy climate.

5. Mind the Straps:

The straps of your leather bag are subjected to the most stress and strain. Regularly inspect them for signs of wear and tear, and reinforce weak spots with leather conditioner or a specialized leather repair kit. When carrying heavy loads, distribute the weight evenly to prevent undue strain on the straps.

6. Clean Spills Promptly:

Accidents happen, but swift action can prevent permanent damage to your Italian leather bag. If you spill something on your bag, blot it immediately with a clean, dry cloth to absorb the liquid. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain and damage the leather fibres.

7. Again as in point 6,

If your bag gets really wet then take immediate action. Wipe it with a soft cloth, pack the inside with paper to absorb any further wetness and leave it to dry naturally, DO NOT Put any Leather Bag in a Tumble Drier or use Hair Dryers.

8. Stay Clear of Harsh Chemicals:

When cleaning your Italian leather bag, steer clear of harsh chemicals and abrasives that can strip away its natural oils and finish. Instead, opt for gentle, leather-safe cleaners that will effectively remove dirt and stains without compromising the integrity of the leather.

9. Rotate Your Collection:

If you’re a proud owner of multiple Italian leather bags, give each one a chance to shine by rotating them regularly. This not only prolongs the lifespan of your bags but also allows them to breathe and prevents them from becoming overused or worn out.

10. Know When to Seek Professional Help:

Despite your best efforts, there may come a time when your
Italian leather bag requires professional attention. Whether it’s for deep
cleaning, repairs, or restoration, entrust your prized possession to a
reputable leather specialist who understands the intricacies of Italian leather craftsmanship.

Hopefully by using the tips above you will not only preserve the
beauty and integrity of your Italian leather bags but also elevate your
personal style with the timeless elegance and story that only a patinaed bag can convey.
