Your first step is to decide on your content, or subject you are going to focus on.
This is so important for you, as you need a subject in order for you to put your affiliate links and recommendations in. This is where you might be struggling, and asking yourself what area you can concentrate on.
The truth is that you can choose anything you want. It is your business, and your choice.
But, if you want to be successful then as you start out pick an area that
- You have experience in
- You have an Interest in.
You must not fall into the trap of looking at others in the industry and think that you need to follow them. Especially if they are promoting things in an area that you know nothing about.
I learned this the hard way. I started creating content around computer programs. I know nothing about computer programs. I struggled. I had no experience in that area and also, as time went on I started to hate doing things in my business because I had no passion or real interest in the subject.
You can probably guess what my results and income were? Yep, zero.
So a lesson for you, look at your experience and interests as a base to build your business on.
When you are looking at ideas, also think about how you would discuss your subject with a friend. Can you easily and simply explain, tell or show what you want to focus on?
Your target audience (and market) want things in a simple way, and in a way that you can relate things to them. Your subject must be something you can speak from your heart on. In other words, be you.
As an action, pick a quiet time. Block yourself off from all distractions (yes even your mobile phone) take a blank piece of paper and brainstorm for 30 minutes on the following type of questions to ask yourself
- What is your Job or Employment experience
- What do you like to read about
- What are your interests
- What are your Hobbies
Etc.
This is your start point.

Also, another mistake I made was that I did not focus on one area or subject. I jumped from Travel, to lifestyle, to health. And back again.
This will cost you in time, focus, energy and results. You will become confused, as will your audience and also the platform algorithms that will promote your content, as to what you stand for.
So choose one area and focus on that subject especially as you learn the basics of Affiliate marketing and earning online.
